PRO TIP – Doming 3 woods
Who hates hitting their 3 wood? I know I do. I am terrible at it!! It is easily my most hated club in the bag. It’s also one of the clubs that people talk about with us in the Pro Shop on how much they hate it or struggle to hit it. I’ll make 2 points that I have implemented that have helped me and will hopefully help you improve your ability to hit a fairway wood.
- Hit down on it. A lot of the time I watch people hit 3 wood they try to help the ball get off the ground. This is usually due to the deception that the 3 wood gives us when we are looking down at it, it seems like there isn’t a lot of loft and we need to therefore “lift” it into the air. Especially because a lot of the time we are hitting it off the ground and not on a tee. It has a smaller club head then driver and overall, just can seem and feel like we need to help the ball into the air. These are generally the cause for poor 3 wood/fairway wood play. Here’s a few pointers/feels to help cure that.
* Check ball position – should sit inline with your left eye. Most people have it to far forward. Check in a mirror
* Cover the ball – by this I mean stay on top of it, keep your chest over the ball while rotating thru.
* Don’t ever lean back. EVER!! Follow thru onto your front lead leg. Any weight moving backward usually = topping it or doming it.
* Take a small divot. As mentioned before – must hit down to get it to go up - The other thing to try if all of the above hasn’t helped is to think of changing clubs. Try changing to something with more loft. Like a 5 wood, or a 7 wood. On the PGA Tour a lot of players are dropping out there 3 wood and going to a 5/7 wood combo. Firstly because 3 wood nearly goes as far as driver so what’s the point of having both? Secondly, the 5/7 wood is easier to hit even for them. It gets in the air faster and is more consistent. When we have fitting days hear, a lot of the time fitters tell us majority of people hit there 3 and 5 wood the same length anyways but have far more consistency with the 5. Per- haps its something you could try.
