PRO TIP – Graveyard on 18: Bunker Tips
If you are interested in some comedy viewing, take a seat on the deck or underneath the deck on the clubhouse and watch people try and navigate hole 18. I have had my problems on that hole that’s for sure! Have you had trouble on that hole? Have you been in that bunker on the right that people take 12 + attempts to get out of on a regular occasion? It’s a graveyard in that bunker on 18. It can be a nightmare
bunker especially if your technique out of the bunkers is ordinary (which to be honest most of the time I watch amateurs, is!) Well today’s tip is for you. Ill touch on the basics, or the general tips on how to properly get out of a bunker without digging a crater to China.
- Wider stance (as wide as shoulders at least).
- Dig your feet in. (so they don’t move) sand moves much easier then grass! Also will help determine how much sands in a bunker.
- Ball position sits on your left heel. – to help with this, draw a physical line from the ball to your left heel (don’t draw line in competition, you will be penalized) when you’re playing socially – I recommend doing this.
- Impact line – draw another line in the sand 2 inches directly behind the ball (again, don’t draw this line in competition) in practice, I strongly recommend.
- Pressure will be 60-40. By this I mean your weight will be on your front leg 60%, and 40% on your back leg. So more weight on your front leg. And it stays there – it never, ever, ever, ever, ever leans back. The moment you have weight on your back foot or moving backwards you are zero chance of hitting a good shot or at least consistent shots out of bunkers – this tip is mega important. Weight stays left!
- Open up the clubface. – so it looks like a “flop shot” or at least looks like it has a lot of loft. (this is so that the bounce of the club is what thuds the sand and gets the ball out). Why does this matter? If you don’t do this and your clubface is square, good luck. Because the leading edge of your sandwedge, or lobwedge is sharp and sand is soft – it will dig into the sand and creates either a fat shot, or you’ll compensate and send it 50m over the other side of the green. (if the bunker has zero to no sand, you don’t need to open the clubface)
- Aim for the line – make a decently big swing and just hit the impact line (2 inches behind the ball). Remember we aren’t just hitting the ball out, we are hitting the sand which propels the ball out.
- Accelerate and Follow thru – most people are scared of hitting the ball over the green so its common to see people do the opposite and just slam there club into the ground and not follow thru. Accelerate thru the shot and finish your swing.
