PRO TIP – Your Not Very Good!!
It sounds harsh. It’s even hard to admit. But it’s the most liberating thing you can tell yourself as a golfer. Golf’s the most ludicrous sport. You’re trying to hit a ball shaped just bigger then a 50cent coin, with a stick that has a head on it that’s the size of someone’s fist, to a hole that’s just bigger than a coke can. Tie in the outdoor climate; rain, wind, heat, cool. Aswell as the variety of golf courses, grass types and grass lengths, & land mine holes with sand in them. If you step back and think about how difficult it is, it can make you rethink ‘should I play another sport?’
The pros we see on tv do it for a living. That means they are spending at least 30-40 hours a week just practicing. They get the best coaching, diet, sports physc, trainer, gym, best equipment, best facilities, and practice 6-10 hours a day…and yet even they dome there 3 wood, chunk one into the bunker, hit one out of bounds. And this is their fulltime job. Yes, they are very good, but they also hit bad shots and more regularly than you think.
Now compare the effort they put in, to the effort you put in. Do you deserve to hit good shots all the time? No. Do you practice the way they do and get lessons or prepare for golf like they do? No. It’s like we think we can swim the 50m freestyle in 22 seconds without doing any swimming training. “But I saw the guy on tv do it so I can too…” No, he’s spent his life and job just training for that. Same goes for golf. The expectations that we often put on ourselves are overwhelming and provide us with a false sense of reality with our own ability. It’s the hardest sport in the world and majority of us put in zero training for it. Why do we think we deserve good results? The sooner you can cut yourself some slack and realise that you aren’t actually very good or deserve perfect golf shots, the sooner you will play better. Does this mean you stop trying or practicing or even bothering? No. It’s a change of expectations in your own mind. You still try to play the best you can, you still practice, you still try to win. But its understanding that its ok to hit heaps of bad shots per round, its ok to play poorly, because in reality you don’t deserve to perform perfectly every game anyway. Stop caring so much about every shot and getting angry at yourself after a bad drive. Give yourself a break – your not that good.
