CLUB INFO

CLUBHOUSE – The clubhouse refresh is well underway. The new TV’s are up and running and the painting will be completed in early February.

JUNIOR GOLF – Our new junior Pathway program started on the 29th January under our new coach Ashley Nisbet and happy to say it was a full group. Please see the website here Junior Golf for more information.

COURSE UPDATE

GENERAL COURSE CARE – If you see Divots in the fairway and rough during your round, Please take the extra 20 Secs and fill them in with some sand. This will help the grass grow quicker in and around that divot and allow the course to repair itself quicker and easier.

17th BRIDGE – The company for the new bridge has been selected. It is the same company that has repaired the 13th and we should have workers on the course and work starting February/March. There will be some inconvenience around the 18th Tee & 17th Green. Please adhere to all directions from staff or workers. Weather permitting and everything going to plan the new bridge should be open around July. The design of the Bridge is in its final stages but the bridge will move towards the 18th Tee block and the path coming down the 18th hill will lead straight onto the new bridge.

GREENS RENOVATIONS – All greens will be double scarified and mowed off & top dressed in March. We do not have a exact date as yet but will be March sometime. I know this is not what everyone wanted to hear with having to go through green renos again but this is needed to assist in bringing the greens back to what everyone expects as members of our club.

FROM THE PRO SHOP

CLEARANCE TIME

Last year’s models are on sale and on clearance at the moment in the shop. Prices are low and we want them gone. If you’re a wheeler and dealer, try your chances talking one of us down in price and grab yourself a bargain. By the time you read this the new Taylomade QI35, Callaway Elyte, Cleveland HI-Bore, Srixon ZXI series, Mizuno JPX and Mizuno Pro series should on the floor. We have demo drivers, fairways, hybrids for most companies.

Although there feels like there’s new gear released every 3 weeks it makes one wonder is there actually any improvement at all? The answer is yes. Companies spend millions researching and developing their product to gain any advantage they can. Just look at how far these pros hit it now, a lot of its their technique, but a lot of it is also the ability to swing out of there shoes and keep it on the planet. Remember the biggest gains from new technology isn’t really how far it goes (although it does go far) its how good it goes when you hit it poorly. The technology improvement for mishits is where the most gains are made.

On top of this, we have multiple demo days booked in for February. Demo days are great because it’s a chance to try new product, get fitted properly and see if all the hype that’s made about new technology is actually worth it. Demo days are free, fun and worth a try. The dates are below. Bookings are required – contact the Pro Shop for availability.

CLUB DEMO DAYS

  • Friday February 14th – Callaway – 10:00am-1:00pm
  • Friday February 21st – Wilson – 1:00pm-4:00pm
  • Friday February 28th – Srixon and Mizuno – 12:00pm-4:00pm

PRO TIP – Doming 3 woods

Who hates hitting their 3 wood? I know I do. I am terrible at it!! It is easily my most hated club in the bag. It’s also one of the clubs that people talk about with us in the Pro Shop on how much they hate it or struggle to hit it. I’ll make 2 points that I have implemented that have helped me and will hopefully help you improve your ability to hit a fairway wood.

  1. Hit down on it. A lot of the time I watch people hit 3 wood they try to help the ball get off the ground. This is usually due to the deception that the 3 wood gives us when we are looking down at it, it seems like there isn’t a lot of loft and we need to therefore “lift” it into the air. Especially because a lot of the time we are hitting it off the ground and not on a tee. It has a smaller club head then driver and overall, just can seem and feel like we need to help the ball into the air. These are generally the cause for poor 3 wood/fairway wood play. Here’s a few pointers/feels to help cure that.
    * Check ball position – should sit inline with your left eye. Most people have it to far forward. Check in a mirror
    * Cover the ball – by this I mean stay on top of it, keep your chest over the ball while rotating thru.
    * Don’t ever lean back. EVER!! Follow thru onto your front lead leg. Any weight moving backward usually = topping it or doming it.
    * Take a small divot. As mentioned before – must hit down to get it to go up
  2. The other thing to try if all of the above hasn’t helped is to think of changing clubs. Try changing to something with more loft. Like a 5 wood, or a 7 wood. On the PGA Tour a lot of players are dropping out there 3 wood and going to a 5/7 wood combo. Firstly because 3 wood nearly goes as far as driver so what’s the point of having both? Secondly, the 5/7 wood is easier to hit even for them. It gets in the air faster and is more consistent. When we have fitting days hear, a lot of the time fitters tell us majority of people hit there 3 and 5 wood the same length anyways but have far more consistency with the 5. Per- haps its something you could try.
